Nature Connection

Various theories on the importance of nature connection have been developed, each offering unique perspectives on how it contributes to well-being. These theories draw on evolutionary concepts, suggesting that humans are not fully suited to urban environments. The Biophilia Hypothesis, for example, posits that our innate instincts from our earliest ancestors make us respond positively to natural settings. The Stress Reduction Theory proposes that exposure to natural landscapes can counteract the effects of stress on our mind and body. The Attention Restoration Theory suggests that nature can help restore our brain's attentional capacities, depleted by the demands of modern urban life.

So, how exactly does nature promote well-being? Looking through the lens of the PERMAH model, we can identify key mechanisms at play. The PERMAH model is a well-evaluated model. It suggests elements that will lead to more well-being when we are mindful to include them in our lives.

  • Positive emotions: Experiencing nature can evoke feelings of joy, gratitude, and awe, leading to a broadened perspective and increased resilience.

  • Engagement: Deep immersion in nature can often lead to a state of deep engagement, which we call Flow.

  • Relationships: Social interactions in natural settings can foster a sense of community and belonging and actions of deliberate play which enhances many effects of relationships

  • Meaning: For many of us  - feeling connected to their natural environment can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

  • Achievement: Working in and with nature (like gardening or cleaning a river from garbage) provides us with a feeling of achievement.

  • Health: Physical activities in natural environments contribute to overall physical well-being.

It is important to consider our individual circumstances and preferences to determine how we can best utilize nature to support our personal well-being. Experimenting with different approaches and finding what works best for each of us can lead to a greater sense of connection, purpose, and fulfillment in our lives. By actively seeking out opportunities to engage with nature, we can nurture our well-being and find solace in the natural world around us.
